Statement

Date: June 1, 2018
Location: Topeka, KS

Governor Jeff Colyer, M.D. this evening issued Executive Order 18-14 establishing the Kansas Alzheimer's Disease Working Group. The working group will be comprised of legislators, stakeholders, citizens, and representatives of organizations intimately familiar with the disease.

"There are over 53,000 Kansans living with Alzheimer's with more than 151,000 caregivers in the state who are caring for loved ones with the disease," said Governor Colyer. "Kansas is the only state in the nation that is not currently drafting or implementing a comprehensive Alzheimer's Disease Plan. It is my hope that this working group will provide research, guidance, and recommendations so we can begin developing one of these plans immediately."

The working group will have goals that include but are not limited to:

Assessing the current and future impact of Alzheimer's disease on residents of the State of Kansas;
Examining the existing industries, services and resources addressing the needs of persons with Alzheimer's, their families, and caregivers; and
Developing a strategy to mobilize a state response to this public health crisis.
